Readme: Descriptive data for USN Research Data Archive Dataset generated by Hilde R. Pedersen and Rigmor C. Baraas ------------------- GENERAL INFORMATION ------------------- TITLE FOR THE DATASET Human foveal cone and RPE cell topographies and their correspondence with foveal shape Foveal_density: Measurements and estimations of the foveal center cone photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) density for 23 persons with normal ocular health CONTACT INFORMATION Professor Rigmor C. Baraas University of South-Eastern Norway Hasbergsvei 36 3616 Kongsberg Norway rigmor.baraas@usn.no DATA COLLECTION 2016–2019 in Norway LANGUAGE English ---------------- FILE INFORMATION ---------------- The files are comma-separated text files and can be imported into R statistical software, Excel or other spreadsheet programs. ----------- METHODOLOGY ----------- Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmology (AOSLO) was used to obtain confocal, dark-field and non-confocal images of the photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) mosaic within the foveal region spanning about 2x2 deg using 1x1 deg fields of view. The macular region was imaged along the temporal and vertical meridians out to 6 and 3 degrees eccentricity, respectively. Individual cones (in confocal images) and RPE cells (in dark-field images) were identified via two different semi-automatic algorithms, as described previously by Li & Roorda, J Opt Soc Am A Opt Image Sci Vis. 2007;24:1358-1363; Garrioch et al., Optom Vis Sci 2012;89:632-643 and Rangel-Fonseca et al., J Opt Soc Am A Opt Image Sci Vis 2013;30:2595-2604, implemented in custom software. ID: Participant ID sex: M=male, F=female age: age at the time of data collection central_CD_count_50: Cone density based on counts over the central 50x50µm sampling window and is given in cones per square millimeter. All cones whose Voronoi cell was completely contained within the sampling window were included. central_RPE_count_200: RPE density based on counts over the central 200x200µm sampling window and is given in RPE cells per square millimeter. Estimated_peak_cone_density: Peak cone cell density estimated from an asymmetric power function that described the cone density profiles across the fovea and parafovea along the horizontal meridian. The function was fitted to log10 cone cell density data calculated from inter cell distance (ICD). Estimated_peak_RPE_density: Peak RPE cell density estimated from an asymmetric generalized exponential function that described the RPE density profiles across the fovea and parafovea along the horizontal meridian. The function was fitted to log10 RPE cell density data calculated from inter cell distance (ICD). These data are for each participant’s dominant eye.
